"Running since 1685, the Appleby Horse Fair is the largest gathering of traveller families in Europe. Both a celebration of a community and a business opportunity for the thousands involved each year. My interest came from exploring the rites of passage the children undertake by following in their parent’s footsteps to parade their horses and ‘take them to water’. As these children embrace their heritage, they embark on an event that indelibly marks their passage into adulthood, continuing a long-standing tradition but also gaining a definitive life marker, a non-religious initiation into adulthood, that’s usually missing in most other European communities. I discovered a generation without pretence and a deep understanding of their place within their community." - Rollo
