Well thank God for that thought Ato Yankey when he was asked to make a video for a high school Geography assignment. Turns out there was a whole world beyond essays and exam papers.

At that pivotal moment, he embarked on an odyssey of self-taught filmmaking, creating music videos, skits, and animations between the early mornings and late nights working as 1st AD on the many productions that wanted him.

It paid off. After a series of killer music promos for Mikill Pane attracted the attention of the ad world, Ato made his TV commercial debut in 2021 with ASDA George’s Arrive Like You Mean It campaign, which is secretly a music video in disguise anyway.

More recently, Ato found himself canoe fishing off the coast of Ghana, using the stars to navigate as part of a personal project documenting local surfers, sailors and fishermen, which probably counts as the greatest geography trip of all time.

He’ll have to come home to celebrate being shortlisted for the British Arrows Young Talent award though.
